Focus and Scope

 

Pesantren and Islamic Studies is a field of study that focuses on Islamic education systems developed in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), as well as Islamic teachings in general. This field integrates historical, philosophical, sociological, and pedagogical approaches to understand pesantren as traditional Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. The scope of this journal includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

1. Focus on Pesantren Studies

  • Structure and curriculum of pesantren: Studies on how pesantren design and implement learning materials, including kitab kuning, Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), Arabic grammar (nahwu and sharaf), and Sufism (tasawuf).

  • Teaching methodologies: Such as sorogan, bandongan, and halaqah learning methods.

  • Kiai–santri relationships: Exploring educational, spiritual, and social dimensions of the relationship between religious leaders (kiai) and students (santri).

  • Transformation of pesantren: From traditional to modern systems, including the integration of formal education, general sciences, and technology.

  • The role of pesantren in society: Social, political, and cultural contributions of pesantren communities.

2. Focus on Islamic Studies

  • Core Islamic teachings: The Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, Theology (Tauhid), and Ethics (Akhlaq).

  • Islamic thought: Islamic philosophy, theology, and intellectual traditions of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars.

  • Islamic history: The development of Islam from the Prophetic era to the modern period.

  • Islam and society: The interaction of Islam with local cultures, politics, economics, and contemporary issues such as radicalism, gender, and pluralism.

  • Comparative studies of Islamic schools of thought and global Islamic perspectives.
